This Whistler Steller’s Jay keenly watched me, watching him… Always eager for peanuts, these Jays recognize individual people and interact in unmistakably intelligent ways. This fellow always watches me intently, chatting up a storm – and I usually reward him for it. Noice the most striking feature of BC’s official bird – its crest and vibrant blue & black colors. What’s less known is that they’re talented mimics, and fool even avid birders with a mixed bag of voices that can range from hawk calls to songbird warblings – or a squeaky door hinge, as I once observed.
