Death/Rebirth Decision-Making Coin

A little bigger than the size of a half-dollar coin, this Death/Rebirth coin is cast in sterling silver. I created this new design in May of 2021 after a dark year at the turning point when parts of the world seem to be reemerging into the light. One side of the coin features a skull the other an ouroboros. I love the concept of this series of coins. This design is the third in the series. This coin is approximately 32mm in diameter. Flipping a coin heads/tails is arbitrary. With this coin you have to assign the choices to an image that has some meaning to you. By the time you have made that choice, you probably know what you WANT to do before you flip the coin. Of course, what you want to do may not always be what you SHOULD do… The coin is something a little special to travel with you as you pick your path through the world. Similar to a worry stone, the coin is something to ground you and to fiddle with during the day. After finishing, I add a patina to the surface and buff with a polishing cloth to create the aged look. Keep the coin in your pocket or purse, and it wears against coins or keys you have and the recesses tarnish naturally. I am not precious with the coin I keep in my pocket, it’s meant to accumulate wear marks and the occasional ding when I toss it and fail to catch it. It becomes a personal talisman that builds character as you do. Casting Lost wax casting allows for the creation of unique forms in metal. A wax design is encased in investment and subsequently fired to eliminate the wax. Sterling silver carefully measured and heated to its molten form. I use centrifugal casting to flood the mold with metal. The mold is quenched, freeing the cast piece and destroying the mold. The item is finished by hand. I carefully file, burnish, and polish the surface into its final form. Even when reproducing designs that I have created wax mold for, every piece created will have slight variations. It is a large part of why I like the process, the organic nature of it results in a special final work every time. My original wax designs are created by hand. I use a variety of hand tools to build, carve and shape the final form. The process is delicate and slow, but allows for the creation of organic shapes that cannot typically be achieved though metal fabrication with stock materials. I use a lost wax process to cast the first piece and then create a mold from that first piece. Every step involves variables that contribute to the final form. A Note About Sterling Silver Sterling Silver is a popular metal used in jewelry. With time, Sterling Silver does accumulate a patina (tarnish). On some pieces this patina creates a beautiful aged look, and on other pieces, tarnish on a highly polished surface it may not be desirable. Some household products, cleaners and body chemistry from the skin may accelerate this process. Although there are many effective ways to clean your silver jewelry, I recommend using a polishing cloth to hand clean your piece. Be sure your hands are clean and the cloth is free of dirt or debris or you may scratch the metal as you gently polish. This piece is shipped with a polishing cloth for your new piece.
