The Lioness

When animals are the stars: It was with this hook that the famous magazine Paris Match introduced the new series of images by Lukas Holas, dedicated to wildlife portraits. Lions, tigers, zebras and many other species are thus showcased in centred, elegant and highly contrasted compositions. Shot frontally and in close up, Lukas Holas’ portraits in black and white differ from standard animal photography, as they are more akin to the long tradition of photographic portraiture. Failing to be able to leave the Czech Republic to photograph wild and exotic animals in their natural habitat, his great dream, Holas Lukas honours and restores dignity to these animals by liberating them in just a few clicks from their constrained world, that of the zoo. Through a surprising play of light and shade, the artist deliberately highlights the animals’ character traits, as well as the intensity of their gazes and the majesty of their postures, exaggerated to give them the appearance of celebrities.
